Shoes: 10 tips to eliminate bad odors
Heat, perspiration and bacteria: this is the cocktail at the origin of sneakers or other things that stink! From talc to the freezer, zoom in on our tips.
Even when we know that our feet can "suffer" with certain shoes, we can't help but fall for the latest trends of the moment: from ballerinas to espadrilles, going through fashion sneakers, dad shoes but also small sneakers in timeless canvas. And as soon as we love them, we don't want to use them anymore.
After a day, the shoes overheat and require care so as not to quickly turn into a stinky ball.
1. Use templates
Easier to wear with ankle boots than with flat sandals, they are a simple and effective bulwark to absorb excess sweat, which causes bad odours.
Should we also specify that this hack works as long as you change soles regularly?
2. Air out your shoes
Every night when you get home, don't wait any longer to get rid of your shoes: not only will your feet thank you, but your shoes will finally have a chance to breathe. And if you can, give them a breath of fresh air by leaving them for an hour on the edge of a balcony or window.
3. Alternate different pairs of shoes
Your grandmother will have already told you: by dint of wearing the same pair of shoes day after day, you accelerate their aging process and the bad smells that accompany it! Whatever your favorite shoe model, limit yourself to wearing them every two days at most.
4. Never slippers without socks
On the stink scale, sneakers often top the charts. If in winter no one would think of wearing slippers barefoot, in summer the refrain is the same. It is true that wearing sneakers in all seasons is great, but it means risking the multiplication of bacteria and fungal infections. So: slippers = minimum sock protector.
5. Baking soda SOS
Useful in both the kitchen and the bathroom, baking soda is also effective at combating odors in shoes.
To make it effective, sprinkle a tablespoon on the soles of your shoes and leave it on overnight. Baking soda has the magical power to absorb excess moisture and eliminate bad odors.
6. Baby talcum powder
It's not just on the baby's butt! Used in the same way as baking soda, talcum powder will reduce odors already set in. But above all, you can also spray it directly on your feet before putting on your shoes for the day: the thin layer of talcum powder will act as a screen and limit perspiration. Very very useful when you want to go out with heels and sandals.
7. Recycle citrus peel to eliminate bad odors
Have you ever experienced half a lemon placed in your refrigerator to clean the ambient atmosphere? Pretty effective, right?
Grapefruit, lemon or orange, all three will have exactly the same magical power to absorb bad odors if you're careful to slip their peels inside your shoes from time to time when you're not wearing them. You can even get a nice, slightly sour smell.
8. The power of plants over bad odors
At the top of the most effective plants we find lavender, sage and tea. It's up to you to compose your favorite bouquet to slip into all of your closed shoes as a preventative measure for your scent to spread.
9. Pamper your feet
Let's face it: getting out of the shower, sometimes you rush to dry your feet. You know those 5 minutes you'd have to spend running a towel between each toe to make sure they're dry. Error: once trapped in the shoes, the door is open to the proliferation of bacteria!
10. The freezing solution
The virtues of extreme cold, athletes know. But did you know that a short stay in the freezer of your fridge also limits the appearance of bad odours? On the other hand, avoid swinging your sneakers or ballerinas without other prior protection or you run the risk of contaminating your entire freezer. The solution ? A hermetically sealed bag!
