Our perfect denim, the best of the best that follows us everywhere and saves us from many fashion situations, deserves special attention to ensure its longevity. Except, almost all of us have a very bad habit that can be fatal for him.

In our closets there are those pieces that turn with the seasons, pass, forget and iron, and those that never leave us. King of the matter, the jeans. You know this perfect denim for our morphology, in which we feel good, beautiful, fashionable and that we would not harm for the world. And it seems that some bad habits, including one in particular, are affecting its lifespan.

Surprisingly and quite simply, it would be your washing frequency. Because yes, many of us are followers of one wear one cleaning (that is, wash it every time it is worn) but there are also the most extreme who advocate never washing it, including professionals in the field and the main denim manufacturers. Among the purists, Chip Bergh, who is none other than the CEO of Levi's, confided a few years ago to Fortune magazine: "Good jeans really don't need to be washed." So what is the middle ground? Some advices.

Jeans: why washing them too often is a bad idea

Professionals are usually unanimous: washing jeans repeatedly (and in the washing machine) would be a very bad option. Why ? To preserve its color. Very often a pretty blue turns into a washed out blue (by definition) or even gray. The color changes, in particular due to chemicals in detergents, such as washing powder, which also permanently weaken the fabric. And obviously, another argument that is not minor, more responsible, also wastes liters of water unnecessarily, and is still very harmful in ecological terms.

Jeans: what is the ideal washing frequency?

First of all, you should know that the raw material of these solid pants rarely gets dirty when you wear them. We also agree that after use, and like any garment, it is covered with microbes, which are certainly harmless, but very real: dead cells, sebum and residue from anything that may have come into contact with the garment during the day are present in the fur.

It is recommended to space the times that they are washed a little: 5 to 6 uses is ideal! A frequency in which several specialists and manufacturers agree and that allows you to have clean jeans that age well. For the most reluctant (probably the largest number!), 3 is already great! Otherwise, forget about the washing machine altogether!

Wash your jeans well: the right steps

If denim professionals advise washing it by hand and with cold water instead of in the washing machine to allow the dyes integrated into the material to last longer, this technique can sometimes be restrictive in our daily lives. If you're too afraid of ruining your favorite wardrobe staple, you can also stuff it in a protective bag, just like you would your bra or other underwear.

Special mention in the case of a "big" stain, we do not try to rub only the dirty area, this could wash the area and leave a visible mark in the long term. We avoid stain remover and benefit from faster machine washing in this case.

Finally, on the drying side, to avoid any risk of shrinkage and discoloration, we save the dryer in favor of the sun, therefore outdoors.
